Kyshtym is situated in the district of lakes and forests and the plant is thoroughly aware of its responsibility towards the environment. The plant's industrial effluents and rainwater are purified in the corresponding water treatment plants. Chemical composition of the effluents is tested both at the plant and beyond it. The plant's ecological laboratory regularly measures emissions into the air according to an approved schedule.
All the plant shops have ventilation systems equipped with the gas cleaning units. The plant's recycling water supply has enabled us to minimize the consumption of makeup water. After the putting into operation of the new anode casting plant, any soil contamination by heavy metal salts was totally eliminated. Natural gas is used in the anode casting plant furnace instead of less environmentally friendly fuel oil. The furnace with its high-efficiency combustion chamber virtually eliminates carbon monoxide and methane emissions.
In 2000, the Plant was the first amidst Russian metallurgical community who began perfecting the environment management system up to compliance with ISO 14001.
